'Scream 4' beaten to the top by 'Rio'

'Rio' a 3D film about two parrots on the run from poachers has beaten 'Scream 4', the much awaited installment of the hit slasher franchise, to the top of the weekend box-office.

While 'Rio' grossed a solid $40 million, according to an estimate from distributor 20th Century Fox, 'Scream 4' collected $19.3 million, reported Los Angeles Times online.

The animated film starring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg had the biggest opening weekend of any film in the US so far this year.

The film which cost about $90 million to produce, had already grossed $75 million heading into the weekend and premiered in 21 additional countries this weekend.

The fourth installment of 'Scream' which reunites the original cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, was made on a budget of USD 40 million.
